Ballroom Dance in Reno and Sparks for Fitness and Mental Health?

Image
Ballroom Dance in Reno for Fitness and Mental Health? I am no doctor, I rarely even go to the doctor, but I do have several friends that are doctors.😁  They all agree if you move your body every single day that is a good thing.  So, all of you that love to "watch" Dancing With The Stars",  "So You Think You Can Dance", Dance whatever show, I hope it inspires you to get your butt off the couch and start dancing for yourself! There are so many videos, articles, and people talking about all the good dance can do for us. I am not going to write an article to convince you to start Ballroom, Latin or Swing dancing in Reno, Sparks or even the Carson areas.  Why? Because that is something you know you want to do or you don't.  So, I am going to go the other way. Some reasons not to dance You just don't want to.   What someone doesn't want to dance?  I know lots of people who don't want to dance, but they love the gym or running or playing tennis or

Free Beginner Adult Dance Classes at the Ballroom of Reno, Why?

Image
Why would a ballroom dance studio have free adult group dance classes every week for beginners? That is a great question.  Other than the Ballroom of Reno being a non-profit dance studio in Reno NV and offering free beginner group classes as a way to create outreach to our community, they decided when they opened 9+ years ago that they wanted BOR to be different.   Being Different How I feel they are different is the Ballroom cares more about growing the dance community and making it affordable for everyone.  Some studios like  Arthur Murray in Reno have a free private lesson which is nice but how much can you really learn in one hour?  The Ballrooms group class is every week for an hour and you are usually repeating the same moves so you get comfortable and confident to move to the next level.  Another way the Ballroom is different is they have all independent instructors that charge their own rate and most are part of the introductory special of only $39 for two private lessons and

Improve Your Swing Dance Reno By Taking Different Types of Swing Dance Lessons

How You Can Improve Your Swing Dancing in Reno with Swing Dance Lessons of Different Styles. There is no dance called "Swing" What?  What do you mean? I have danced swing so I know it's a dance!  Well, you dance a style of swing.  You could have danced Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, East Coast Swing, Collegiate Shag, Jive, Bal-Swing, Lindy Charleston, Carolina Shag, St. Louis Shag, D.C. Hand Dancing, Rodeo Swing, Ceroc, Modern Jive, Boogie Woogie, New York Bop or West Coast Swing or shit there probably are more that I can not think of.   Why is it called swing? In the '20s the dance came along with the music of the day.  In Swing music, the musicians play some notes late and then catch up in the next couple of beats.  (in dance we call that light and shade)  They call that swinging the beat.  So when you dance a swing rhythm you will hold one of the steps longer.  An easy way to see it is to use words instead of numbers 1 & 2 you can say, "dot, dot, dash"  when d

How often should you take Ballroom or West Coast Swing Classes in the Reno or Sparks area?

Image
🍷🍷 How Often Should You Take a Class or Private Lesson? This was always a question I am always asked when a student just starts taking Ballroom Dance or West Coast Swing lessons in Reno.   That is not always an easy answer but I will tell you what my students do and what I recommend.   If you have been dancing for some time and had really worked hard for years on dance, and now (like one of my wonderful "once in awhile students" said) are "cruising along" while still being a good social dancer, not focused on competing, then an every once in a while lesson is perfect for you because it sharpens the saw if you will.   I also have students who are really good social and competitive ballroom or west coast swing dancers here in Reno, that also like to perform in showcases and compete in the occasional dance competition.  Those dancers enjoy taking several hours a week but not because they care that much about competing or performing but because they have told me it&#

West Coast Swing Reno this is a Great Turn Exercise

West Coast Swing in Reno and Sparks with a Great Turn Exercise. I posted this video on my Youtube channel Better West Coast Swing Reno  and people have told me how much they liked the exercise to work on turns so I thought I would put it here for you.  But let me go over some lingo and some differences on what an inside turn is versus what an outside turn is and how they are different.   Inside turns in WCS Inside turns might mean different things to different styles of dancers but in the context that I am using it for west coast swing in my lessons here in Reno , a partner lead turn is an inside turn when the follower's arm comes across the body with a lead.  Most WCS dancers are familiar with the inside turn or also known as an "inside roll" on the leader's left side pass or even on the right side and the follower is turning to the left because the follower's right arm is being led across the chest causing them to turn to the left.  What I have discovered is tha
