Free Beginner Adult Dance Classes at the Ballroom of Reno, Why?

Why would a ballroom dance studio have free adult group dance classes every week for beginners?

That is a great question.  Other than the Ballroom of Reno being a non-profit dance studio in Reno NV and offering free beginner group classes as a way to create outreach to our community, they decided when they opened 9+ years ago that they wanted BOR to be different.

Being Different

How I feel they are different is the Ballroom cares more about growing the dance community and making it affordable for everyone.  Some studios like Arthur Murray in Reno have a free private lesson which is nice but how much can you really learn in one hour?  The Ballrooms group class is every week for an hour and you are usually repeating the same moves so you get comfortable and confident to move to the next level.

Another way the Ballroom is different is they have all independent instructors that charge their own rate and most are part of the introductory special of only $39 for two private lessons and the Next Step package of only $199 for four private lessons!  If you don't dig your teacher you can move on to a different one if they have any time available.  You are the customer and as the client, you get to pick your teacher if you want.  In most ballroom dance studios, you may start with the high-level dance instructor or even the owner of the studio but often when you buy your block of lessons to get the discount they pass you to a lower-level dance teacher.  That blows big time when you think you are buying lessons and they will be your teacher.  It doesn't always happen but I have been around studios for over 30 years and yep they do it all the time.

The Best and Biggest Dance Floor in Reno

The Ballroom has 7000+ square feet and the main floor is over 3600 sq feet just as the freaking main floor!  They have so much room to dance that it may look like not many are there when you have 20 people dancing!  In other studios they can't even have 20 people dancing at the same time or if there are it is so crowded it's hard to dance.

So, that is just the main floor.  TBOR (The Ballroom of Reno) has four rooms to practice, have lessons, or did I say practice?  You know you can rent some floor space and practice right?  I digress, when I teach the west coast swing class I will at times have 40 to 50 dancers and there is still a crap load of more room.  (My intent is to have 100 students in our beginner class so come on let's do it!)

Also the floor is raised, cushioned and real freaking wood in the main two rooms.  I knew a very expensive ballroom dance studio in Reno that had floor tiles that kinda sorta looked like it was wood but it was a stick tile.  Yeah, I taught on it once and that was a big nope.  (I honestly don't know if they ever changed it or not but come on. )

How else is TBOR different

They are the most affordable, no pressure, they give a shit place to learn to dance.  Not only do they have free beginner group classes, they lowered the group class rates to $10 for the summer starting in July just to welcome people back to dancing.

Studio run by a team and a board of directors

Just the last thing about them.  There is a team of 7 people that are very involved volunteers that make decisions for the ballroom.  It is comprised of teachers and students.   The board of directors also is comprised of students and non-students that reach out into the community to help make a change for the better so all interests are represented.

Decisions are made for the betterment of the dance community and allowing the students to have a voice in what happens in their ballroom, Latin and swing dance studio in Reno.

Check them out and take the free beginner classes to see what the buzz is all about.
I look forward to seeing you on the dance floor soon.

Cheers,
J
