Why do we take adult dance classes in Reno, really?
I was at
Keystone Escape Games last night having a conversation with a buddy of mine, Mark Blume, who is a great dancer and teacher. We were talking about why adults in Reno really take dance classes and group lessons in ballroom, Latin, west coast swing, ballet or tap.
Sure it's because they want to learn to dance...probably, but I feel it is very much the same reason why people go to the escape game room because they want to have fun, meet people, be challenged and have a hobby.
You can do anything and probably do multiple things, along the way one of the things you chose to pick was dance as the vehicle to give you what you were looking for. Or maybe as I like to say, "Dance picked you."
You might have always wanted to dance and never got around to it because you were working on your career, raising kids, did not have the extra money when you were younger, had some fears, maybe you danced when you were younger and now are looking to get back into it. Whatever, the reason, it doesn't even matter what style of dance. Maybe, you grew up dancing ballet and may never thought to take lessons and dance ballroom, Latin, or swing in Reno or Sparks.
I know a lot of students (men and women) that stopped dancing because they got married and their spouse did not dance. To me that is the worse reason, to stop doing something you love just because your life partner doesn't do it. I doubt they stop fishing if you don't dig fishing or playing bridge if you were not into it.
Best Story Ever
I had a woman taking ballroom dance lessons in Reno that used to dance and she then took a long break. I asked, "What got you dancing again?" Her reply, "Well, my husband is departed?" So of course I gave my condolences and she said, " Oh no, he's not dead, he is just departed." Then followed up with "I should of never stopped dancing just because he wanted me to, it was my fun and my social life."
Getting started taking adult dance classes in Reno or Sparks?
What style should you learn? When I was 15 or so I danced ballet...okay, I took ballet classes, (I was terrible) but I did dance jazz and tap in shows. When I was dancing in a show in L.A. I met someone who was a ballroom professional and suggested I look into it. So, anytime a girl told me to "look into it" I thought hey maybe I should look into it and this time I did. 😄 That was over 30 years ago and I have not stopped.
Along my journey, I fell in love with West Coast Swing even though as a ballroom snob I made fun of it. Yeah, we can change styles and have an entirely new set of dance friends while keeping the old ones. I have students that often say they didn't like WCS until they took my class.
I pondered that question often. Why would someone not like a dance by one teacher or studio then take another class from somewhere else and fall in love with the dance? I would say the fun level!
Does Ballroom Dance, West Coast Swing Dancing, or Latin Dances in Reno have different fun levels?
What dance is the most fun? If you ask me I would say all of them. Ballroom was my first dance love and still is. Also, it gave me a dance career, but If you stuck a gun to my head and said you can only dance one style of dance I would have to pick West Coast Swing. Why? Because we can dance to almost any kind of music and I enjoy the variety.
So, do they have different fun levels? Maybe, because you are a special you and the dance style has to resonate with you. How do you find what dance you like best? Take different classes. It's like wine or whiskey for me. I try all kinds of different ones and enjoy most of them. But depending on my mood or dinner I am having that night will help me decide the one I choose. I cannot imagine just having one I drink all the time. 🍷
My suggestion. Go take all the
free beginner adult ballroom, Latin, and Swing dance lesson group classes that are offered at
the Ballroom of Reno School of Dance . It will give you a taste of different styles and get you started for free. They even have great inexpensive beginner private lessons introductory special starting at $39 for two private lessons.
Do yourself a favor, go experience the fun dance can give you. Go without your mate at first if they don't want to go, eventually, they see how much fun you are having. Often partners will join you even if they do not dance. it may be they just want to be with you and meet new friends. I have a friend that did not dance but for years hung around us and became a friend. then one day started taking private lessons for a year to surprise his wife. Talk about a happy spouse!
Cheers,
