Not only does Reno have the best Salsa, Bachata, and other Latin dance classes like Cumbia, Merengue, and Cha-Cha, we also have the real deal, awesome Latin dance teachers that can dance their asses off!
One of the unique things that I discovered about the Latin dance community in Reno is that they have dance teams and I mean lots of dance teams. Some learn a unique routine that was choreographed by the dance director/choreographer of that team just for that individual group and some teams use choreography that dancers all over the world learn.
Why would they use the same choreography and collaborate? The way this was explained to me was by doing this, it allows you as a dancer to go to a dance festival in another city or even country by yourself and possibly be able to dance on another team because all the costumes are the same as well.
Some have just a few dancers on the team and others have well, lots of dancers. Some are couples and they also will have just a women's team or a men's team. Okay, I guess I need to say nowadays, followers team and a leaders team. 😉
Going to what I am going to call "real" Salsa, Bachata and Cumbia classes in Reno is different than just taking a salsa class at a regular ballroom. The reason I say this is because I was a ballroom Latin dancer and in the ballroom world the dances are what I call "ballrooomized" so they take the street out of the style and it's about posture and perfect technique. Don't believe me? Just Youtube ballroom Latin championships watch those dancers and then watch the salsa dancers from these teams. There is just another feel and flavor that in my humble opinion, gives the dance a cool suave style and vibe.
I am not saying one is better than the other. My experience when I went to a Latin club in Los Angeles back when I was competing in Latin and ballroom someone said, "You look good but you dance "ballroom salsa" (by the way someone said the same to me when I learned ballroom west coast swing!) So with both styles of dance, I immediately went to the real deal teachers and learned how to dance what they are dancing in clubs. I was soooooooo happy I did.
So simply, if you want to go to clubs and dance salsa, bachata, cumbia, and merengue check out Gerzon's authentic Latin dance classes at the Ballroom of Reno School of Dance Studio or would like to be on a team, keep a watch on our social media and in the ballroom for team tryouts of all levels.
See you on the dance floor!
Cheers,
J
