Salsa on Two and Bachata Classes in Reno at the Ballroom of Reno with Gerzon Chavez

Salsa on Two at the Ballroom of Reno Dance Studio

One of my friends and fellow teachers Gerzon Chaves pronounced (Jehr-sawn) so I call him "G" 😎 showed me how awesome he is as a dancer recently.  I had never seen him dance and I was watching a practice of a routine he was working on and even when he said they had just learned it a couple weeks ago, I was blown away.

Gerzon or G teaches Salsa on two at the ballroom and I asked him why did everything change over to Salsa on 2 instead of what I learned as Salsa on 1.   This is G but he has long hair and looks cooler now.

Here is what I gleaned from our conversation and the research I did but I am not the expert for sure.  So if you want to learn Salsa on2 in Reno then check out G's classes at the Ballroom of Reno Dance Studio.  He is awesome and founder of  Tiempo Latino Dance Compay @TiempoLatinoDanceCompany

Salsa on 1 timing is known as L.A. style, which when I learned how to dance it a loooonng time ago it focused on sharper music hits and cool flashy type of moves.  ( I never got to the flashy level for sure)

Salsa on 2 is often called or known as New York style and was popularized by Eddie Torres and is known more for a sauve feel with more complex turn moves.   (again this is just what I have educated myself about but I was might have been drinking so who knows.)

There is a lot more to know about Salsa on 2 but it is super popular and not any harder than dancing salsa on 1 in Reno.  What I understand is the moves are not really different in the general sense of the dance, they break differently and the music always dictates the break if you know anything about dancing to the music.  I had another Reno salsa dance friend tell me sometimes the music will change the break in the middle of the song and you have to know to change your style. So if you really want to get good learn how to do both on1 and on2.  Of course, I thought to myself, it's a good thing I dance ballroom and west coast swing!

People seem to dig Salsa on 2 in Reno though.  The feel of dancing salsa On1 differs from On2 because of where the slower count is.  There are reasons for the timing of the break step.  Dancing Salsa On1 connects the melody which you can break down into 8 counts.  Breaking on 2 relates more to the instruments.  Honestly, if that makes sense to you.  You are ahead of most dancers and probably already know both styles and why you like them both for different reasons.  Most novice dancers just think or hear the beat.  That is why it is so important that you learn the music of any dance that you are dancing.  Remember, the music is the reason we dance.  If not then why play music?

Always know, the more educated you are, the more you can have a valid opinion on which style is better.  There are a lot of dancers that love them both equally for completely different reasons.  So, be sure to educate yourself and check out Gerzon's classes and all the other classes that are offered at the Ballroom of Reno Dance Studio.

Cheers,
J
